During a field trip near Sóskút village (10 km SW of Budapest in Etyek Hills) a new locality of T. foetidum was discovered in 2006. This is the first Hungarian locality of the species W of the Danube (further localities are known at Mt Esztramos, Bükk Mts and Mt Naszály, all located in the Northern Mountain Range, E of the Danube). The new locality is a small hill (175 m) consisted of Sarmatian limestone, called “Mt Kálvária”. Thalictrum foetidum occupies mostly the crevices and more or less shady edges and bends of the cliffs on the northeastern slope of the hill.

A short survey is made of the areal, cenological and ecological aspects of the species, with special reference to its populations in the region of the Carpathian Basin. Based upon field observations and literature data - contrary to the statements and suggestions of Zólyomi (1936, 1939), Simon (2000) and Suba (2002) - T. foetidum is not a thermophilic taxon, though clings to xeric habitats. It is also presumed that T. foetidum is an eurithermic taxon. Consequently, T. foetidum should be considered in the Carpathian Basin as a “xeric relict species” (the term proposed by Pócs 2000), but not a xerothermic relict one. The age of this continental species in the Carpathian Basin is very uncertain.
