Between 1998 and 2000, large stands of the fanwort has been found in some non-thermal drainage ditches and irrigation canals between the Danube and Tisza Rivers, Central Hungary. This species is native to North- and South America, it has been introduced to several countries in Asia and Europe and became an invasive weed in Washington and Oregon (USA), Ontario (Canada), Australia and Japan. This paper gives a description of the morphology and biology of the fanwort as well as its distribution in Hungary. The author assumes that this plant also occurs in other canals between the studied sites and it is able to spread downstream drifted by the Danube.
