Gagea bohemica according to the Hungarian coenological literature (Soó 1973, Horváth et al. 1995) is a „quite basiphilous” steppe-meadow plant. However on the basis of our coenological studies it occurs most characteristically on open rocky surfaces with significant moss cover and on soils of a little bit acidophilous with poor nutriment. It corresponds with the statements of Ellenberg (1996) and other authors. In our region the species occurs on different base rocks like on acidophilous sand (e.g.: Sáska), pebbles (e.g.: Berhida), sandstones (pannonic sandstone: Szentbékkálla: Kőtenger, new data), permian red-sandstone (Alsóörs); Hárshegy sandstone (Pesthidegkút), basalt (Raposka), andesite (e.g.: Pomáz, Gyöngyös), granite (Pákozd, Nadap), dolomite (pl: Szár: Zuppa-hegy), limestone (Triassic limestone: Bánhida; Turul-hegy; sarmatian limestone: Sóskút). The examination of these occurrences pointed out that the species rather ties in every place to small (0,5 – some m2), slightly leached, acidophilous microhabitas. This is true even in case of data originating from basiphilous base rocks (limestone, dolomit) while acidophilous surfaces favourable for Gagea bohemica may occur locally in the steppe meadow-rock grass mosaics of them. These are generally such surfaces on which the vascular vegetation is of low coverage contrary to the moss cover which is significant (e.g.: Ceratodon purpureus, Polytrichum piliferum, Hypnum lacunosum, Tortula ruralis). During the previous coenological research of traditional scale less attention was paid for studying such microhabitats, therefore one could easily understand why the data of the species appeared in slope steppe meadow surveys.
