A Carex buxbaumii Wahlenb. Magyarországon

While searching for Carex hartmanii habitats in 1995, in a tall sedge marsh near Vindornyalak (county Zala) and in a calcareous purple moorgrass meadow near Köveskál (county Veszprém), the author discovered a new member of the Hungarian flora: Carex buxbaumii Wahlenberg. Some diagnostic morphological characters important for identification on field were investigated (without destruction) in comparison with Hungarian Carex hartmanii populations. Four quantitative characters: utricle length, top spike length/width, lowest bract length/stem length, stem length/inflorescence length, were evaluated statistically. The total number of the examined individuals was 136. The phenograms show well separated groups. The distinguishing may be even more efficient by including qualitative characters (e.g. shape of spikes, colour of leaves, rigidness of stem etc.). There is an interesting feature of Hungarian Carex buxbaumii populations: the spikes are rather overlapping then remote. The description of localities, the results of coenological investigations are published. Table 3. contains the frequencies of other species in 25 circles of radius 0.5 m. around C. buxbaumii individuals. These are detailed for the two localities in Tables 3.-4. According to Borhidi's ecological indicator values, Carex buxbaumii proved to be somewhat more basifrequent then Carex hartmanii. This is keeping with other European results.
