The paper gives a brief account of the latest results in numerous aspects of phylogeny and taxonomy of orchids by reviewing the current literature. Main parts are: distribution and origin of orchids, the backgrounds and methods of phylogenetic analyses, the classification and nomenclature of Hungarian Orchids.

The main aim of this account is to provide a more detailed scientific background to the chapter entitled 'The phylogenetics and taxonomy of Hungarian Orchids ' in the forthcoming title Atlas of Hungarian Orchids published in Hungarian.
