The paper gives a brief account of the latest results of hybridisation of European orchids by reviewing the current literature. Main parts are: historical background, isolation mechanisms, interspecific and intergeneric hybridisation, introgression and the role of the pollinators.
The main aim of this account is to provide a more detailed scientific background to the chapter entitled 'Hibridisation in European Orchids' in the forthcoming title Atlas of Hungarian Orchids published in Hungarian.
