The paper gives a brief account of the latest results of conservation and threat of European orchids by reviewing the current literature. Main parts are: the rate of decline of European Orchids, loss and degradation of habitats , the European orchids and the salep, the orchids as indicators and umbrella species.
The main aim of this account is to provide a more detailed scientific background to the chapter entitled 'Threat of the European Orchids' in the forthcoming title Atlas of Hungarian Orchids published in Hungarian.
