Medves-mountain (671 m) and its surroundings have hardly been explored from the floristic point of view. The 1995-96 survey of the author has revealed that there are nearly 600 species in the region (ca. 10 km2) higher than 400 metres above sea level. This seems to disprove some earlier statements by throwing light on the abundance of species due to the diversity of the geomorphological surface and human influence (brown-coal and basalt mining, plough and pasture lands). It is remarkable that in the studied area, in addition to some mountain species rare in Hungary, there are also numerous lowland ones (e.g. Beckmannia eruciformis) uncommon in medium-height mountains.
