The recently (1995) known three places of occurrence in Hungary were invetigated in order to establish species relations and coenological units in which Carex hartmanii occurs. Two kinds of sampling units were used. In 424 circles of radius 0.5 m around C. hartmanii stems the presence of all other vascular plants species were noted. In stands with relatively homogenous vegetation some quadrats of 50 m2 were recorded with Braun-Blanquet method. Table 1. contains all the species and their frequency, occured in the circles. These are detailed for the 3 places of occurrence in tables 2.-4. Figure 1. shows the strongest assotiations between the species in the sampling circles. The samples, were analysed by multivariate statistical methods (hierarchical clustering, PCA, NMDS) too. Some results of earlier Hungarian coenological investigations were included in the analysis for the sake of comparisons. The associations in which C. hartmanii grows, fall mainly within alliances Magnocaricion (Caricetum elatae, C. gracilis, C. distichae, Carici-Typhoidetum) and Molinion (Succiso-Molinietum, Junco-Molinietum); this rare species occurs frequently in transitions between them (but were found as most abundant on a rather small mosaic of a willow-fen). ). A new association ( Caricetum elato-lasiocarpae) and two new subassociations (Succiso-Molinietum caricetosum hartmanii, Junco-Molinietum filipenduletosum ulmariae) are proposed. These are typical C. hartmanii habitats.
