This paper is about the way of preparing vegetation maps in forests of submountain region on the following purposes: phytogeography, coenology, practical application in sylviculture and nature conservation. The author deals with the problems connected with the scale, the method and the selection of vegetation categories. Working with moderately or considerably altered vegetation the author recommends the use of 1:10000 scale and the field survey amplified with analysis of aerial photographs. In case of moderately altared stands the use of the units of classical phytocoenology (association, consociation, subassociation, facies), in case of stands with significantly altered vegetation the use of secondary vegetation types are offered.
