A new nature conservation area has been protected in 1989 near Ásotthalom village. Because of the enormous amount of its botanical values it has received the „Magic meadow” nickname. The aim of this research is to find the other grassland patches with similarly high natural value in the region, and to develop a habitat network in order to protect the regional biodiversity. The two most important habitat types are: wet meadows, dominated by Molinia hungarica and the so called steppe grasslands occurring on the sand dunes emerging like islands from the wet meadows, and dominated by Chrysopogon gryllus and Festuca rupicola. The total number of the remained grassland patches is 33 in a 20x24 km area. A landscape scale scanning of this area were done, the occurrence of relevant plant populations and vegetation types were recorded and characterized. After the full survey of the area the revealed distribution pattern and metapopulation structure of important plant populations will help to organize their protection. The data processing and evaluating by landscape ecological tools will give further important aspects for planning the nature conservation management of the area.
