Extrazonal steppe grasslands [Pulsatillo-Festucetum rupicolae (Dostál) Soó] reach their greatest extension in the south-eastern part of Bükk Mts. The most typical and richest in species are stands of Kisgyőri-Galya Mt.. The community was investigated at this locality with methodology of Zürich-Montpellier school. Analysis of 40 sample quadrats revealed dominance of Festuco-Brometea species of mostly continental, pontic and submediterranean distribution. Vegetation in general indicates dry and warm climatic conditions and low availability of nitrogen on rendzinas and on their transitions to brown forest soils.

Three subassociations of different species composition were distinguished reflecting minor alternations of environmental conditions. Decreasing pH, that of the rate of xerothermity and an increasing soil depth suggest a strengthening connection towards woody communities in the order as follows: centauretosum micranthosi-caricetosum humilis-stipetosum pulcherrimae.

Species composition of the first two subassociations is more similar while that of stipetosum pulcherrimae is equally distinct from both. As these subassociations have spatial connections only to different thermophylous woody communities but not towards each other they represent alternative ways of succession rather than stages of the same successional series.
