Periglacial loess accumulated at the foothills of the Hungarian Central Range has become an important refuge area for loess vegetation in Hungary. Our study sites on the Southern part of the Budai hills are on dolomite bedrock covered by thick loess layer. The landscape has strongly been changed by human activity over the past centuries. We applied landscape historical methods for the theoretical reconstruction of the original vegetation. The following sources of information were used: (1) floristic data on the present vegetation, (2) maps and literature about the past states, and (3) comparison with the vegetation of less disturbed areas in similar abiotic conditions. We conclude that loess vegetation was more widespread over the landscape in the past, primarily represented by loess oak forests. Deforestation and agricultural management caused great changes in the composition of vegetation. Intensive grazing caused erosion in the loess cover, which led to the spread of secondary dolomite grasslands.
