During years 1996–2000 the authors performed a preliminary research of variability and distribution of aquatic marsh plant communities in the inundation of Ipeľ River. The study area included a part of territory between Malý Kiarov and Bušince villages (southern Slovakia), and Őrhalom and Nógrádszakál villages in northern Hungary. Total 50 phytocoenological relevés characterise 6 aquatic and 19 marsh plant communities. For each of them short description and notes about endangerment and distribution are added. One of the aims of the paper was also evaluating the study area from the point of view of nature protection.
