The Mély-völgy (Deep Valley) is one of the most spectacular gorges in the eastern part of Bükk Mts. It is built up of three types of bedrock as Triassic limestone, dolomite and porphyrite and due to its northern exposition is dominated by communities and species which indicate its cool climate. As a consequence of its various relief the gorge represents a high diversity of communities with glacial relic species (Calamagrostis varia) as well as thermophylous (Colutea arborescens) and acidophylous (Vaccinum myrtillus) ones in close intimacy.

From a phytosociological point of view the most important are the beech forests on rocky walls (Seslerio-Fagetum) with the endemic (Sesleria heufflerana ssp. hungarica) and the linden-ash rocky forests (Tilio-Fraxinetum) with the most typical stand on the eastern slope of the valley. Moreover various thermophylous and rock dwelling grass-land and forest communities (Diantho-Seslerietum, Pulsatillo-Festucetum, Waldsteinio-Spiraetum, Ceraso- and Corno-Quercetum) can be found as well with the gorge forest (Phyllitidi-Aceretum) at the bottom of the valley. The above botanical values give a good reason to declare the area as a strictly protected part of the Bükk National Park.
